Mira Walker is a passionate performer and teacher currently based in Detroit, MI.

Mira has been widely praised for her deeply sensitive performances of repertoire ranging from J.S. Bach to Florence Price, and overwhelmingly lauded by her students for creating challenging yet positive learning environments focused on the individual potential of each student. Mira’s major teachers include Yakov Kasman, Norman Krieger, and Logan Skelton. Mira completed her Bachelor of Arts in Music at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and her Master of Music in Piano Performance at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. Mira is a candidate for the Doctor of Musical Arts in Piano Pedagogy and Performance at the University of Michigan, completing her dissertation work under the instruction of Logan Skelton (piano) and John Ellis (pedagogy). Her dissertation focuses on the pedagogical legacy of American pianist and composer Margaret Bonds. Mira also serves as a Graduate Student Instructor at the University of Michigan.

Mira’s honors include top prizes in dozens of competitions, including the NANM Scholarship Competition, National Federation of Music Clubs Collegiate Piano Competition, the Alabama Symphony Concerto Competition, and the Musicians Club of Women Instrumental Competition. In recognition of Mira’s excellence in teaching, she was awarded the Joanne Smith Award for Piano Pedagogy in 2023. In 2022, she was awarded a Gilmore Festival Fellowship, where she worked closely with pianists Michelle Cann and Lara Downes.

Mira is an active performer, giving concerts nationally and internationally in solo and chamber settings. She has been a featured soloist with orchestras such as the Alabama Symphony Orchestra and the National Ukrainian Symphony. Mira has performed in master classes with Ann Schein, Jeremy Denk, Boris Slutsky, Marina Lomazov, Arthur Greene, and many others. She appears frequently at international music festivals such as International Summer Music Academy (Kyiv, Ukraine), Gijón International Piano Festival (Gijón, Spain), Vivace International Music Festival (Wilmington, North Carolina), and Brevard Music Institute (Brevard, North Carolina). Mira is is actively involved with the MTNA Chapter at the University of Michigan, and served as Chapter President during the 2024-2025 Academic year. She presented a lecture recital on the Spiritual Suite by Margaret Bonds at the 2024 MTNA Collegiate Symposium and 2025 CMS Great Lakes Conference, and has presented at national and international conferences hosted by MTNA, NCKP, and IAWM.

Mira was awarded a Rackham Doctoral Fellowship to work with A Seat At the Piano during the summer of 2024, where she worked to expand a database of works by underrepresented composers, contribute to ongoing publication projects, and create an educational video series: ASAP Kids. Mira’s recent and upcoming projects include recording for the Michigan Recording Project and collaborations with ArtsEco, an organization that explores the intersection of arts and sciences. Mira will be working for the Detroit Symphony Orchestra during the summer of 2025 to expand their community programming through their Detroit Strategy.

Upcoming performances for 2025-2026 include a series of recitals featuring compositions by Women of the Chicago Black Renaissance in Bogota, Colombia (CMS International Conference), Ann Arbor, MI. (University of Michigan), Lombard, IL. (NCKP) and Chicago, IL. (Artists in Recital Series - Musicians Club of Women). Mira will also be featured as a soloist with the Ann Arbor Symphony in 2026 (Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 2).
